How do you give cod liver oil to a yellow bellied terrapin ?

what type of cod liver oil do you give them and were do you get ut from and is it really necessary ? thanks xx

Please, do not give your terrapin cod liver oil unless you’re sure he has a vitamin A deficiency. It is not necessary as if you feed them the right diet they will get plenty of vitamin A. Too much vitamin A is as bad as not enough (and can even lead to the beak falling off!) and the symptoms are so much alike that vets oftentimes diagnose it the same but too little can be corrected and too much cannot, so err on the side of not enough.
A proper diet would include whole live food such as feeder fish, earthworms, and gutloaded crickets. Turtles get nutrition such as calcium from fish bones and vitamin A and E from the fish livers, so it’s important to feed whole food. Many make the mistake of feeding only meat which is a good protein source but does not have the other nutrients. They should also be fed veggies like turnip greens, watercress, kale, radicchio, shredded carrots, and occasionally romaine. These veggies also have good amounts of vitamin A and other nutrients. This diet can be supplemented with turtle food pellets to make sure they get everything. However, turtle pellets usually contain corn, wheat, or soy products which are completely indigestible to turtles, so this should never account for more than 15% of a turtle’s diet. It would be good to always have a cuttlebone available to him.
If you do need to give him cod liver oil, you can use human capsules of it. Cut it open and inject one or two drops of it (no more–it’s very concentrated!) into a piece of food. A freeze-dried krill or tubifex worm or a small piece of cooked chicken or a piece of a strawberry would work very well. I use this method to administer any kind of liquid vitamin or medicine when necessary. You could also try soaking a little of his pellet food in a little water with twice the dose of cod liver oil (or vitamin) in it and the pellets will absorb it as they soak up water. That way it will not wash off as he eats it.
